Today I woke up late and nostalgic,
overburdened with cares
from a dream that made me withdraw
a memory straight from the bank
on Hawthorne.

I was going to take my ten—
step out of my current reality,
let the past rise up and meet me—
but you were in the mood
for a glorious midday walk,
so you came along.

We missed the signal
because we got caught up in semantics again:
personality versus preferences.

Maybe we are just fundamentally different.

Then someone shouted from across the street,
“You two should get a booth and kiss it out.”

We both agreed that sounded contrived,
but technically possible.

So we took an early lunch
at the historic house-turned-restaurant,
where pretty much everything is made from scratch.

They shouldn’t have been surprised
to find us making the most of the wait.
