Without church,
the people would take to the streets
on Sundays,
but still thirst for a preacher—
someone to guide them to purpose or shade,
as they merge, part, and swirl
like currents in a slow-moving river,
measuring themselves against their storefront reflections,
and the number of eyes that follow them.

Someone to call for their offering,
to help them turn out their pockets,
and, if they come up light,
decide how much to keep, how much to give,
how much a body costs to keep upright,
how much water it takes to feel human.
