They put out benches, bistro sets,
and barrels—flat side up—
and it created a bottleneck.

The traffic around us flowed considerably slower,
like water poured from a wine bottle,
and in that pause, our words found their way,
and we made our way back to each other.

When the server came to see how everyone was doing,
I think I said fine or OK, and they walked away—
but we kept talking about it.

Isn’t it ironic
that a planned environment
was just what we needed
to facilitate organic conversation?
